Hatching a Praying Mantis

In order to start hatching a praying mantis, put the egg case into a terrarium, in case you are planning to keep them as pets. A terrarium can take the form of a fish bowl, a jam jar or any other container, as long as there is a small branch of plant left inside.

Install mesh on the top to prevent the nymphs from getting away but allows for both air flow and food delivery. The egg case should be stored at a temperature of approximately sixty-seven to seventy-eight degrees F. It must not be directly exposed to sunlight. Either use a heating mat if you intend to keep the case inside the house, or hang it in the shade outside of the house.

A humid temperature needs to be maintained. The terrarium can be lightly misted with water each day. If you maintain appropriate conditions, the eggs must hatch in about three to six weeks. Once they have hatched, one egg case will hold fifty to two-hundred praying mantis nymphs. In the event that you want to keep some of them as pets, free a few praying mantis nymphs in the first two days. You new pets should be fed with flies, aphids or other small insects.
