STD Testing Q & A
What is STD screening?
STD screening involves testing and/or diagnosis for several sexually transmitted diseases. The team at the Urgent Care Center of Arlington recommend the most appropriate tests based on your sexual health and lifestyle. STD testing is quick and generally pain-free.
How are STD tests performed?
There are a number of methods used for STD tests, each unique to the condition in question. Depending on which tests you opt for, some of the methods can include:
- Urine sample
- Cheek swab
- Physical exam
- Blood sample (finger prick)
The Urgent Care Center of Arlington provides on-site STD screening so you can receive results in as little as two hours.
What happens if I test positive?
If your screening comes back with a confirmed diagnosis, then the first step is to discuss treatment with your provider. Although an STD diagnosis is never welcomed news, there are steps you can take to improve your sexual health and manage your risks in the future. Many STDs can be effectively treated with medication, so it’s important that you discuss your options.
The Urgent Care Center of Arlington specializes in the treatment of a number of STDs, including gonorrhea and chlamydia.
What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is an infection commonly spread through sexual contact. Bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonorrhea, and infects your urethra, rectum, throat, and can even spread to the cervix. Although there are symptoms, gonorrhea often goes unnoticed for quite some time.
Some of the symptoms of gonorrhea include:
- Painful urination
- Painful intercourse
- Pelvic pain
- Discharge
Gonorrhea can also affect your eyes, throat, and joints. If left untreated, gonorrhea can result in infertility in both men and women, and can also cause complications during childbirth. Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia is another common condition caused by bacteria and spread through sexual contact. It’s caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacteria that is most often spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. In the early stages, there are very few signs and symptoms of chlamydia, and when symptoms do arise, they are often mild and similar to other conditions.
Some of these symptoms include:
- Vaginal discharge
- Abdominal pain
- Painful intercourse
- Painful urination
Chlamydia can be tested for using a urine test or swab of the infected area. If left untreated, chlamydia can result in infertility and also lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Luckily, chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics.
